Argyle is the only airport in St Vincent and the Grenadines with scheduled international flights, and for most visitors it is a place to pass through on the way to somewhere smaller. It opened on 14 February 2017 on the windward, Atlantic-facing coast of the main island, replacing E. T. Joshua, the cramped runway at Arnos Vale on the edge of Kingstown. The new site is about 30 minutes from the capital by road, and the onward connections that matter to most arrivals leave from elsewhere: the Bequia ferries from the Kingstown jetty, the yacht charter bases on the south coast, and the small planes to Canouan and Mustique. The terminal itself is modern, with a free WiFi network across most of the building, a bank and ATM in the arrivals hall and four car hire desks. What it does not reliably have is somewhere to buy a SIM. Digicel's own store list puts nothing at the airport, and the nearest shops keep weekday hours. With a working eSIM you can message the ferry office, the charter company or the villa manager from the baggage belt, and that is worth more here than the price gap with a local card.

Why the Airport Is on the Far Side of the Island
E. T. Joshua sat on a strip of flat land at Arnos Vale, a short taxi ride from the Kingstown ferry terminal, but its runway was too short for long-haul jets and there was no room to extend it. Argyle was built on the only suitable flat land, on the windward side at Argyle Gardens, and was the largest capital project in the country's history at an estimated XCD 700 million. Its single runway, 04/22, runs beside the Atlantic coast with low hills to the west.

Older guidebooks and forum posts still describe landing in town and hopping straight onto the boat, so it is worth knowing that advice is out of date. Flights now include American Airlines from Miami, with seasonal service from Charlotte and New York JFK, JetBlue from JFK, Air Canada from Toronto, and Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow via Barbados. Regional links come from Caribbean Airlines, interCaribbean and Sunrise Airways, and SVG Air and Mustique Airways fly small aircraft on to Bequia, Canouan, Mustique and Union Island.
Coming through Barbados
Barbados is the busiest route out of Argyle, and many travellers from Europe and North America connect there. If your eSIM covers only SVG, remember that it will not work during a Barbados layover. A regional Caribbean plan that lists both countries, or a small Barbados plan, keeps you reachable if the connection slips.

Argyle was built for up to 1.5 million passengers a year, more than four times the old airport's capacity. The services a visitor needs are in General Arrivals, after customs.

The SIM kiosk question
One recent visitor guide says Flow and Digicel both run kiosks in arrivals, with hours that are unreliable for evening flights. We could not confirm it. The airport's own FAQ lists no phone vendor, and Digicel's published store locator names five locations, none of them at Argyle. The options on the main island are Digicel's head office on the Vigie Highway at Fountain, open only until 3pm on weekdays, and The Cell on Halifax Street in Kingstown. If a kiosk is open when you land, treat it as luck rather than a plan.
Drawing EC dollars from the ATM before you leave is worth doing whatever you decide about data. Taxi fares are usually agreed in EC dollars, the Bequia ferries sell tickets in EC dollars, and a Digicel plan bought later is priced to the cent in the local currency.
Using the AIA Public WIFI Network
The airport runs a free network called AIA public WIFI. According to the airport, it covers every area of the terminal except the customs arrival hall, which is exactly where you spend the longest wait. Plan your activation around that gap.
Do the setup at home
Buying and scanning a QR code is a job for your own sofa, not an arrivals hall. What the terminal network is good for is the last step, turning on a line that is already on the phone.
Expect nothing in customs
Between the immigration desk and the exit from customs there is no airport WiFi. If you need to message a driver or a ferry office from the queue, only mobile data will do it.
Join AIA public WIFI in General Arrivals
Once through customs, connect to the network, accept any sign-in page and switch on the eSIM line with data roaming allowed. Check that it has attached to Digicel or Flow before you walk out to the forecourt.
Save the essentials offline
Download the St Vincent map area, the ferry timetable and your accommodation details while you still have both connections. The drive around the south coast is covered, but Bequia and the southern islands have fewer places to fall back on WiFi.
Taxi Fares and the Ferry Deadline
Taxis wait outside arrivals. They have no meters, so agree the fare before loading bags, and agree it in EC dollars. The airport does not publish a fare card, and the figures below are ranges reported by recent visitor guides, so treat them as a way to spot a bad quote rather than an official tariff.

Most people heading for Bequia go straight from the terminal to the jetty in Kingstown. Bequia Express publishes weekday departures from St Vincent at 8am, 9:30am, 1pm, 4pm and 5pm, Saturday sailings at 8am, 9:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm and 5pm, and only three on Sunday at 8am, 4:30pm and 5pm. Its adult fare is EC$25 one way or EC$40 return. Bequia Fast Ferries runs a quicker boat and charges visitors EC$30 one way. Bequia's own tourism site advises arriving at Argyle before about 4:30pm to catch the last boat the same day.

Where it cannot help
Heading further south, Bequia Express sails from St Vincent to Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, with adult fares of EC$60 to Canouan and EC$80 to Mayreau or Union. That is a full day on the water, which is why many visitors to the southern islands fly instead.
Connecting to Canouan, Mustique and Bequia by Air
SVG Air and Mustique Airways operate small propeller aircraft from Argyle to the Grenadine airstrips, and Air Adelphi has run seasonal charters too. For villa guests on Mustique and resort guests on Canouan, this is the usual route, and it changes what you need from your phone in the first hour.

Transit time at Argyle between an international arrival and a small plane can be short, and the transfer desk may call names in the arrivals hall rather than send texts. Keep the airline's local number saved, and use the AIA public WIFI network while you wait. Once you land on Mustique there is no shop that sells a SIM, so a plan already running on your phone is the only data you will have outside the villa.
Heading for a charter at Blue Lagoon
The yacht charter bases on the south coast are a short drive from Argyle. Charter briefings, provisioning orders and weather apps all expect data, and once you cast off, the next place to buy a card may be Bequia or Clifton. Get the eSIM onto the phone before the trip, sized for the whole charter in both gigabytes and days.

The Digicel counter wins on price by a lot, and for a stay on the main island longer than a week you should use it. The difficulty at Argyle is that no counter is reliably open where you land. The Fountain office closes at 3pm, The Cell at 5pm on weekdays and 2pm on Saturdays, and nothing opens on Sunday. A traveller landing on an afternoon flight and heading straight for the Bequia boat, a small plane or a charter briefing will not pass an open Digicel shop. For that traveller, an 8 dollar Nomad or Airalo plan covers the gap, with a local plan from Bequia Tech or Clifton later if the stay runs long. Anyone going straight to Mustique should arrive with the larger eSIM, because there is nowhere on that island to buy anything else.
