That short ride is exactly why people underestimate the first hour. Neither Flow nor Digicel sells SIM cards in the terminal, the Digicel store in town keeps office hours and closes at 1pm on Saturdays, and a good share of arrivals are not staying on St Kitts at all but heading on to Nevis by ferry, water taxi or a Cape Air hop, each with its own timetable to check. What Lands at Golden Rock, and When
The airfield dates from the 1940s and took its present shape in a US$17 million renovation finished in December 2006, which resurfaced the 8,002 foot runway and enlarged the apron so six wide-body jets can park at once. A one-megawatt solar farm beside the runway, built in 2013 with Taiwanese funding, spells out Welcome to SKB in panels. The authority that runs it, SCASPA, also runs Port Zante and the Basseterre ferry terminal.

A railway station next door
The St Kitts Scenic Railway, the narrow-gauge line built between 1912 and 1926 to haul sugar cane around the island, runs its tourist trains from a station at Needsmust, right beside the airport. It mostly serves cruise excursions from Port Zante rather than arriving flyers, but if a coach or taxi from the terminal seems to be heading toward a platform instead of town, that is why.
No SIM Desk at Arrivals: What That Means in Practice
Current traveller guides agree that neither operator sells cards at SKB, and we found nothing from either company advertising an airport counter. The name on Digicel's corporate office, One Airport Road, Basseterre, suggests otherwise to some visitors, but the published retail counters are a Fort Street store in Basseterre and a Main Street branch, both open 8am to 5pm on weekdays, 9am to 1pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

On price alone the Digicel store wins, and for a stay of a week or more it wins by a lot. The eSIM answers a timing question. A weekday morning landing with a hotel in Basseterre makes the store an easy detour. A Saturday afternoon landing, or a transfer that goes straight to a Nevis boat, does not, and those are the arrivals where a small eSIM earns its price. Terminal WiFi: Use It for One Job
We could not confirm the name of any public WiFi network broadcast in the SKB arrivals hall in 2026, or whether one is offered free to arriving passengers, so we would rather say that plainly than print an SSID that may not exist. Treat any open network you find in the terminal as a bonus.
Look while the bags come off
Check the WiFi list in the baggage hall rather than at the kerb, and look for a network carrying the airport authority's or a carrier's name. If one appears, open a plain web page to trigger any sign-in screen.
Finish, do not start
The useful job for a terminal network is completing activation of an eSIM you already installed, or sending one message to say you have landed. Downloading and installing a plan from zero on an unknown connection is where arrivals go wrong.
Check the network name once you are on data

Why the short ride still needs data
The drive to Frigate Bay takes a quarter of an hour, but a villa on the Southeast Peninsula can be forty minutes out along a road with few landmarks, and a Nevis-bound traveller needs the ferry or water taxi times while standing at the rank. The drivers work to fixed fares, not apps, so the phone's job here is directions, contacts and timetables rather than booking a ride.
Zone Fares From the Rank, and the Buses That Do Not Come Here
Taxis at SKB are not metered. Fares are set by route for a vehicle carrying one to four passengers, with a per-person rate beyond that, and the cabs carry yellow plates beginning with T or TA. Published 2026 guides quote the ranges below in US dollars; confirm the fare, and any late-night or luggage supplement, before loading bags.

Older traveller reports put Frigate Bay a few dollars higher, in the high twenties, so treat the lower figure as the published maximum and do not be surprised by a small premium at night. Drivers also quote by the hour for sightseeing, commonly around US$40 an hour for up to four people.
The minibus option, and its limit
Public buses carry green plates starting with H and charge a few EC dollars a ride, from EC$2.50 for short hops. They work the coast roads out of Basseterre, west from the ferry terminal toward Sandy Point and Capesterre and east from the East Bus Terminal toward Molyneux and Saddlers. No route runs south to Frigate Bay or the Peninsula, and none is built around the airport, so a resort guest arriving by air is effectively a taxi customer.
Onward to Nevis: Four Ways Across, Four Timetables
A large share of SKB arrivals are really going to Nevis, and this is where a working phone pays for itself. Each route below has its own schedule, published by the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority, and each can change at short notice.

The water taxi line needs a warning. NASPA's timetable lists departures from Reggae Beach between 6am and 1:15pm, operated by Blu Waves and Islanders Water Sports, with a small facility fee charged at Oualie on top. An afternoon jet can easily land after the last listed boat, leaving a chartered water taxi or the ferry from Basseterre as the options. That is a phone call to make from the taxi rank, and it is far easier with data. NASPA's price sheet lists the ferries in EC dollars; confirm the currency of the water taxi fare when you book.
On the water itself, signal is rarely the problem. The ferry runs down the leeward coast within sight of both islands, and the Narrows crossing is about two miles wide. Your St Kitts and Nevis plan works on Nevis without any change.
Flying Out of SKB
Leaving is easier than arriving, but the Nevis leg can catch people out in reverse. A guest staying on Nevis with a morning jet out of SKB has to start with the first boat or an early Cape Air hop, and the water taxi timetable lists departures from Oualie starting at 5:45am. Keep the eSIM active through departure day so you can track the flight, check whether your boat is running and message the driver waiting at Reggae Beach or the Basseterre pier.
