Kigali International is a small, calm airport on the eastern edge of the capital, and it is close enough to the city that the whole arrival, from the aircraft door to a hotel in Kiyovu, can take under an hour. That makes the connectivity question here less about survival and more about sequence. Buying a local MTN line at the airport is cheap and entirely possible, but under Rwanda's 2024 registration rules it means a passport check, a fingerprint and a live photo before the line works, and after a full long-haul arrival that can be the slowest part of your evening. A travel eSIM activated as you taxi to the stand lets you message your driver, book a Move car or check the hotel's directions while everyone else queues.

Neither choice is wrong. If you are staying a week or more, register MTN either here or at a city service centre the next day. If you leave for Musanze at dawn, arrive with data already working.

The Terminal, and Where the MTN Shop Sits

KGL is a single terminal operated by Rwanda Airports Company, in Kanombe sector, Kicukiro district. The original central building handles check-in and arrivals processing, and a newer international pier, opened in 2017, carries the long-haul gates, so walking distances are short, rarely more than ten minutes airside. It is also RwandAir's home base, and evenings bring a cluster of arrivals from Brussels, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Nairobi and other hubs, which is when the arrivals area is busiest.

After immigration, baggage and customs you leave the building along a covered walkway toward the car park and pickup area. The MTN shop is outside, at the end of that walkway, alongside a few other kiosks, the forex counter and ATMs, and it generally opens to meet incoming international flights. Treat Airtel's presence at the airport as unreliable and plan around MTN.

What the counter will ask for

The passport you have just used at immigration, your fingerprint, which is checked against the immigration service's database, and a photo taken on the spot. The line is activated once the check returns. Agents load a bundle for you on request, so ask for a monthly one: 13 GB for 7,000 francs or 30 GB for 10,000 francs on MTN's current list.

Can you buy an eSIM at the airport?

There is no eSIM vending point at KGL. You can, however, connect to the terminal WiFi and buy any travel eSIM online in a few minutes, without any registration, because travel eSIMs are data-only and are not covered by the local SIM rules. It is the same purchase you could have made before leaving home, at the same price.

Airport WiFi at Kanombe

KGL offers free WiFi across the terminal, both landside and airside, and it is generally adequate for messaging, email and a quick eSIM purchase. Look for the airport's own open network in your phone's WiFi list, accept the terms on the landing page, and you are online. We could not confirm the current network name for this update, and it has changed before, so look for signage near the arrivals hall or ask at the information desk.

1

Connect before leaving the baggage hall

Reception is best inside the building. Once you are outside by the car park the signal weakens quickly, so finish any purchases or downloads before walking out.

2

Activate an eSIM you already own

If you installed a Rwanda eSIM at home, switch its line on and set it for data. Nomad and Airalo will attach to Airtel, Holafly to MTN. Turn data roaming on for that line only.

3

Save offline maps of Kigali

The city's hills and the KN and KG street grid can confuse drivers. A saved map with your hotel pinned is the most useful thing to download while you are still on airport WiFi.

The departures side has a few cafes airside, including a Bourbon Coffee outlet, and the WiFi is useful there for last messages before an onward flight, but do not count on it for heavy downloads.

Kanombe to the City: Fares and Times

The airport is roughly 10 to 12 km by road from the central commercial area, along the airport road through Remera. Off peak the drive takes about twenty minutes, and at the evening rush, thirty or more.

OptionTypical fareTime to centreData needed?
Airport taxi from the rank10,000 to 15,000 RWF, more for outer neighbourhoods20 to 30 minNo, but confirm the fare first
Move or Yego Cabs appRoughly 8,000 to 12,000 RWF20 to 30 minYes, to book and track
Moto-taxi from the roadA few thousand RWF15 to 25 minHelpful, to show your pin
City bus with a Tap&Go cardA few hundred RWF40 min or moreHelpful, for routes
Hotel or operator pickupOften included in safari packages20 to 30 minUseful for messaging the driver

Airport taxis wait directly outside, generally quote fixed prices rather than running meters, and often accept US dollars as well as francs. Ride-hailing fares vary with demand, and the app will show you the price before you confirm. Motos are quick but you arrive with luggage on your knees; most travellers keep them for later in the trip. If you need cash, the ATMs at arrivals dispense francs, and the forex desk exchanges clean, recent US dollar notes.

The data needed to get a ride is small

Booking a Move car and tracking it uses only a few megabytes. Even Nomad's 1 GB for 6 dollars covers several days of ride-hailing, messaging and maps while you decide whether to register a local SIM.

MTN Counter or eSIM: Comparing the Arrival

On price alone, the MTN shop wins easily. On time, the eSIM does. Here is the honest comparison for a typical evening arrival.

MTN shop at KGLTravel eSIM
Cost for a month10,000 RWF for 30 GB, plus a few hundred for the cardUS$21 for 5 GB (Nomad) to US$45 for 20 GB

Choose the airport counter if

✓You are staying a week or longer and want the cheapest data
✓You want MoMo and a local number from day one
✓You landed on a quiet flight and the shop has no queue

Choose an eSIM if

✗You land late and leave Kigali early the next morning
✗Your driver is waiting and you need to message them
✗Your trip is three or four days of guided trekking

A middle route works well: buy Nomad's 1 GB for 6 dollars before you leave home, use it for the arrival, and register an MTN line at a city service centre such as CHIC or Kimironko when it suits you.

Leaving KGL, and the Airport That Will Replace It

On departure, expect a security check with bag screening at the entrance to the terminal before you reach check-in, then a second screening before the gates. Allow time for both, particularly when several long-haul departures overlap late in the evening. Your eSIM or local SIM keeps working throughout, and the airport WiFi covers the gate areas.

KGL will not be Rwanda's main airport forever. The new Bugesera International Airport is under construction around 40 km south of Kigali, with Qatar Airways as the majority partner, and the government has committed to having it operating by 2028 after several delays. For now, every international flight still uses Kanombe. If you are booking a trip for 2028 or later, check which airport your ticket names, because the transfer times and the connectivity notes above will no longer apply to Bugesera.

Keeping your Rwandan number

If you registered an MTN SIM and expect to come back, the 2024 regulation lets subscribers whose visas have lapsed keep a number dormant for up to three years. Ask at a service centre before you leave rather than letting it lapse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MTN shop at Kigali airport inside or outside the terminal?

Outside. After customs you follow the covered walkway out toward the car park, and the MTN shop sits at the end of it among a few other kiosks, near the forex desk and ATMs. It generally opens for incoming international flights, but if you land very late, be prepared for it to be closed or busy.

What do I need with me to register a SIM on arrival at KGL?

The passport you just entered Rwanda with. The agent takes your fingerprint, checks it against immigration records, and photographs you before activating the line. You cannot use a copy or a second passport, and nobody else can register the line on your behalf.

How much should the taxi from Kanombe into Kigali cost?

Airport taxis typically quote 10,000 to 15,000 francs to the centre, a little more to outer neighbourhoods such as Nyarutarama or Kicukiro's far side. Move and Yego Cabs often come in somewhat lower, around 8,000 to 12,000 francs, but you need data to book them. Agree on the taxi fare before getting in.

Can I get online at Kigali airport without a SIM?

Yes. Free WiFi covers the terminal, landside and airside. It is fine for messaging and for buying and installing a travel eSIM on the spot. Signal weakens once you walk out to the car park, so finish any downloads inside.

Will I land at the new Bugesera airport instead of Kigali?

Not before 2028 at the earliest. Bugesera International is still under construction south of the city, and all international flights use Kigali International at Kanombe for now. Check your ticket if you are booking for 2028 or later.
