Entebbe International sits on a peninsula poking into Lake Victoria, about 40 kilometres south of Kampala, and for almost every overseas visitor it is the only way into Uganda by air. Getting a phone online here is straightforward on paper: MTN and Airtel both sell cards in the arrivals area once you have cleared baggage and customs, and MTN hands foreign passport holders its Tourist SIM for free. The friction is timing. Many long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf land late at night or before dawn, registration involves fingerprints and a photograph, and the line has to pass verification before it works.

That is why a small travel eSIM makes more sense here than its price alone suggests. It lets you book a Bolt or message your driver as you walk out, and leaves the local card for the morning, at a calmer desk in Entebbe town or Kampala. If you are flying on to Kihihi or Kisoro for gorilla trekking the same day, it may be the only connection you have time to set up.

Where the SIM Desks Are at Entebbe

The airport has been in the middle of a long expansion. A new 20,000 square metre passenger terminal opened in January 2026 and is being commissioned in phases, adding three aerobridges for a total of five, 24 extra check-in counters and 14 self-service kiosks, and lifting capacity from about two million passengers a year to at least 3.5 million. Immigration moved its departures operation into the new extension in April 2026. Arrivals procedures have been shifting as the phases come into use, so the walk from the aircraft may not match a description from a year or two ago.

What has stayed constant is where the phone desks are. Once you are through immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, the arrivals hall has an MTN and Airtel shop just behind the information desk, on the left as you head towards the cafe. A second cluster of kiosks stands in the forecourt roughly fifty metres outside the building and still within the airport gates, which is where people meeting you will usually be waiting. MTN lists its airport outlet as one of its official service centres, the place to pick up the free Tourist SIM.

Have these ready before you reach the desk

Your passport with the entry stamp or e-visa printout, because the Tourist SIM is tied to your visa. Some Ugandan shillings, since bundles are bought with airtime after the card is live; the arrivals forex counter and the ATMs in the hall are a few steps away. And patience: with fingerprints, a photo and verification, ten to forty minutes from the back of the queue is a fair estimate.

The Free WiFi in Arrivals

Free WiFi is offered in the arrivals hall and the meeters and greeters area, as well as across the departures side. It is an open network with no password, provided historically in partnership with Airtel; older guides list its name as Free Airtel/CCA WiFi. We could not confirm the exact network name in use after the 2026 terminal changes, so look for the open network carrying the airport or Airtel name and avoid anything asking for card details.

  1. Open WiFi settings once you are in the arrivals hall and choose the open airport network.
  2. If a landing page appears, accept the terms. There is normally no login or payment.
  3. Use it for the quick jobs: telling your driver you have landed, downloading an eSIM QR code you forgot to install, or checking the Bolt fare before you walk out.
  4. Do not plan around it for anything longer. Speeds fall away when a full widebody unloads, and the signal does not stretch far beyond the doors.

If your eSIM is already installed, connect to the WiFi only if you need to download something large. Otherwise switch on the travel line as you taxi in and leave WiFi alone.

Entebbe to Kampala: Expressway, Fares and Signal

The quickest route to Kampala is the Entebbe Expressway, a toll road of about 51 kilometres including its Munyonyo spur. Off-peak it takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to central Kampala. The old Entebbe Road through Kajjansi and Zana is toll-free but can take two hours or more in traffic.

OptionTypical costData notes
Airport taxi (yellow, marked AIRPORT TAXI)UGX 80,000 to 120,000No app needed, but agree the fare and whether the toll is included before you set off
Bolt or Uber carAround UGX 100,000 midday, more at night or in rainNeeds live data to book and to share your trip
Hotel or tour operator pickupOften included in safari packagesMessage the driver on landing to find them in the forecourt crowd
Expressway toll, light vehicleUGX 5,000 per passagePayable by mobile money at designated lanes since late September 2026

Coverage on the expressway is strong on both networks the whole way, so a video call to tell home you have arrived is realistic on the drive. Plenty of visitors skip Kampala on the first night altogether. Entebbe town is ten to fifteen minutes from the terminal and has guesthouses near the Botanical Gardens and the lakeshore, which makes sense if your safari leaves westward early the next morning or your flight lands after midnight.

Flying On to Bwindi, Kisoro or Murchison

Entebbe is also where many gorilla trips switch to light aircraft. Scheduled and charter flights head west to the Kihihi airstrip for Bwindi's Buhoma and Ruhija sectors and to Kisoro for Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga, and other routes serve Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo. Those flights save a drive of nine hours or more each way, and they change the connectivity sums.

Why an eSIM suits a same-day connection

✓No time lost at a SIM desk between a long-haul arrival and a light-aircraft departure
✓Airtel-based plans are the better bet around the Bwindi lodges you are flying to
✓Messages to the lodge driver waiting at a rural airstrip go through as soon as you land

What to watch for

✗Rural airstrips may have only one network in range, sometimes neither
✗Light aircraft baggage limits are tight, so offline maps beat a spare device
✗An eSIM still gives you no local number for a ranger or driver to call

If your itinerary includes one of these hops, install the eSIM at home, switch it on during the taxi in at Entebbe, and check it shows Airtel or MTN before you board the small plane. You will not get another chance to troubleshoot it until you reach the lodge.

Desk or eSIM: Landing-Day Costs Compared

Here is what each route onto a Ugandan network costs on landing day.

On price there is no contest: the local cards are a fraction of the eSIM cost. The argument for the eSIM is the hour you land in. If you arrive in daylight, have no onward flight and do not mind the fingerprint scanner, take the free MTN card at the desk. If you land at 2am, are being met by a driver you have never seen, or are flying west the same morning, a cheap Nomad plan installed before departure is the calmer start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the SIM desks at Entebbe before or after customs?

After. The MTN and Airtel shop is in the arrivals hall behind the information desk, past baggage reclaim and customs, and more kiosks sit in the forecourt about fifty metres outside the terminal within the airport gates. You cannot buy a card airside while waiting for your bags.

What happens if my flight lands at Entebbe in the middle of the night?

The main shop is meant to stay open around the clock for overnight arrivals, but staffing at that hour is thin and registration still involves fingerprints, a photo and verification. Many night arrivals use an eSIM or the open airport WiFi to reach their driver and collect a local card in daylight.

How do I get onto the WiFi in the arrivals hall?

Choose the open airport network in your WiFi settings and accept the terms if a page appears; no password is required. Older guides name it Free Airtel/CCA WiFi, though we could not confirm the current name. It is fine for a message or a QR code download, not for anything heavy.

What should a car from Entebbe airport to central Kampala cost?

Roughly UGX 80,000 to 120,000 by airport taxi, and around 100,000 by Bolt or Uber at midday, more at night or in rain. Check whether the UGX 5,000 expressway toll is included. Off-peak the expressway run takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Can I connect at Entebbe and fly straight on to Bwindi the same day?

Yes, and that is the case where an eSIM pays for itself. Light aircraft leave Entebbe for the Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips, which serve Bwindi and Mgahinga. Install your eSIM at home, confirm it registers on Airtel or MTN as you taxi in, and skip the SIM desk between flights.
