The Cayman Islands are one of the few places in the Caribbean where a local SIM is not the obvious budget play. Digicel adjusted selected prepaid prices from 1 August 2026, its current price list tops out at CI$72 for a month, and the card itself costs CI$11 before you load a plan. Because the Cayman dollar is pegged at roughly 1.20 US dollars, every figure on the counter is about a fifth higher again once you think in US money. Set that against Nomad's 5 GB for 19 dollars and 20 GB for 49, both valid thirty days on the Flow network, and the local card only draws level for a stay of about a week.
There are still good reasons to walk into a store. A Cayman number helps with dive shops, restaurants and condo managers who prefer to call, Digicel's plans bundle local calls and a separate pot of entertainment data, and both networks advertise 5G where the travel eSIMs are sold as 4G. Digicel's Prepaid Ladder After the August 2026 Price Change
Digicel published a customer advisory on 1 July 2026 announcing that the prices of selected prepaid plans would change from 1 August, with some plans gaining larger data allowances in return. The list below is what Digicel's Cayman site showed in September 2026, after that change. Each plan splits its data into an any-use allowance and a separate entertainment allowance for designated streaming and social apps, and only the any-use figure is fair to compare with an eSIM. Prices are in Cayman dollars and include tax.

The 7 Day plan is the clear sweet spot. It is the only rung that beats 3.50 dollars per any-use gigabyte, and it gives more general data than the 10 Day Prime Pro that costs almost half as much again. The 3 Day Prime Starter is the odd one out: it costs more than the 2 Day plan yet carries half the any-use data, and it is set to auto-renew at CI$10.29, so skip it. Above a week, the ladder gets steadily worse for a visitor, and the monthly plan works out at more than 4.30 dollars per any-use gigabyte.
Minutes to the other network
Every plan includes endless calls on Digicel's own network plus a set allowance of minutes to Flow numbers, and the table shows that allowance. If the villa manager, dive operator or restaurant you need to call is on Flow, those minutes are what you will be using, so the bigger plans earn a little more value for a visitor who phones a lot.
Flow's Combos, Data Bundles and 5 Day eSIM
Flow's Cayman website is a script-driven app that would not return its plan list to us, so the Flow figures here come from a local Cayman guide updated on 10 September 2026 that itself marks Flow's pricing as pending direct confirmation. Treat them as a close guide and check the current numbers in the MyFlow app or at the counter.

The combos add unlimited local texts and unlimited calls to other Flow numbers on top of the listed minutes, and the 7 GB weekly combo lands at exactly Digicel's CI$20 weekly price, so for one week the two operators are level. The monthly options are where Flow falls away. Its 18 GB data bundle costs about 75 dollars, while Nomad sells 20 GB over thirty days on this same Flow network for 49, and its 8 GB monthly combo is dearer still per gigabyte. If Flow is the network you want for a long stay, buying it through Nomad is the cheaper way in.
Flow's own eSIM
The same guide reports that Flow sells a 5 day prepaid eSIM at CI$15 with 3 GB of data, 75 local minutes and unlimited local texts and Flow-to-Flow calls. Unlike the travel eSIMs, it gives you a Cayman number. We could not confirm whether a visitor can buy it before arriving or only in a Flow store, so check how it is issued before you rely on it for arrival day.
Digicel's Travel SIM and the Local eSIM Question
Digicel's Cayman site has a page aimed squarely at visitors, headed with an invitation to get an eSIM for your trip, and it sells two products under the Travel SIM name. Both are valid for thirty days and work across a list of Caribbean countries rather than Cayman alone.

Two things about these pages do not add up, and we would rather flag them than paper over them. The 5GB product's own page lists 10 GB of any-use data under its 5GB title, which is almost certainly a template error, so assume 5 GB until a store says otherwise. And Digicel's eSIM FAQ, last updated in October 2025, still says eSIM is available to postpaid customers only and must be collected in a store, which sits awkwardly beside a tourist eSIM page. Ask at the counter before building a plan around either.
Even taken at face value, the Travel SIM is not a bargain for a Cayman-only trip. CI$30 for 5 GB is about 36 dollars, nearly twice Nomad's price for the same allowance, and CI$40 for 10 GB is about 14 dollars more than Nomad's 10 GB plan. Its real value is the multi-country list: someone flying on from Grand Cayman to Jamaica, the Turks and Caicos or the Eastern Caribbean gets one Digicel product for the whole trip. Three Digicel Stores, the Passport and No Sunday Trading
There is no SIM desk at Owen Roberts International Airport; the airport authority's own list of concessions runs to duty free, souvenirs, books and food, with no phone shop among them. New lines are sold in town, and Digicel publishes the hours of its three Grand Cayman stores.

Bring the passport, not a photo of it
Prepaid lines in Cayman are registered to photo ID, and for a visitor that means the passport itself. Supermarkets and fuel stations sell top-up credit widely, but a first SIM needs the ID check.
Budget for the card fee
Digicel charges CI$11, about 13 dollars, for a prepaid SIM, a cost that no travel eSIM has. On a short stay it is the single biggest reason the local option loses.
Name the plan you want
Ask for the 7 Day Prepaid plan by name rather than loading credit. Pay-as-you-go data on bare credit is typically charged well above bundle rates.
Check the phone is unlocked
Digicel's eSIM FAQ states that its lines only work in a phone that is unlocked or locked to Digicel itself. Sort this with your home provider before the trip.
Sunday arrivals and cruise calls
All three Digicel stores close on Sundays, and Grand Cayman's public buses do not run that day either. If you land on a Sunday, or your ship calls on one, the local option simply is not open. A travel eSIM installed at home is the only way to have data on that day without roaming.
The Counter Against Nomad and Airalo, in US Dollars
Converted at roughly 1.20 US dollars per Cayman dollar, and with Digicel's CI$11 card fee added to the first plan, here is how a visitor's realistic options line up.

Read down the table and the pattern is plain. For a cruise call, the local route costs more than twice Airalo's plan and needs a store visit you may not have time for. For a first week, a new Digicel line costs a few dollars more than Nomad's 10 GB plan while giving less general data, although it adds a Cayman number, local calls and entertainment data. Only a repeat visitor who already holds a Digicel card gets a slightly better per-gigabyte rate for seven days. For a month, Nomad's 20 GB costs 37 dollars less than Digicel's equivalent.
So the honest advice for the Cayman Islands runs the other way from most of the region. Buy a travel eSIM by default, Airalo for a day in port and Nomad for a stay. Choose a Digicel or Flow card when the local number or the calling allowance is worth something to you, or when you are staying for months and moving on to a postpaid contract.
Cayman Brac, Little Cayman and Taking a Line Abroad
A local SIM behaves exactly like a travel eSIM once you leave Grand Cayman for the Sister Islands, because the limiting factor is the network rather than the product. Both operators serve Cayman Brac, where coverage is reasonable around the settlements and the airport, and both reach Little Cayman, where service is limited and patchy with dead zones. A Digicel card offers no special reach there, and neither Digicel store is on the Sister Islands, so buy anything you need on Grand Cayman before the Cayman Airways Express flight.
Where a local card does differ is abroad. Digicel's Travel SIM covers around twenty Caribbean countries on one product, and a Cayman prepaid line can add Digicel roaming for its other markets. Roaming zones and prices for Cayman customers are set out on Digicel's legal pages and change often, so check them before relying on that route. Your travel eSIM, by contrast, is a Cayman-only product and stops working as soon as you land in Kingston, Providenciales or Havana.
Keeping a Cayman number for next winter
Many Cayman visitors come back to the same condo every year. A Digicel prepaid line stays alive while it is topped up, and the MyDigicel app handles renewals from abroad, so a returning visitor who keeps the card active skips the CI$11 fee and the passport step the following season. Does a local SIM get 5G when the travel eSIMs do not?
Potentially. Every Digicel prepaid plan is tagged 5G Enabled, and Flow has run 5G in George Town and parts of Seven Mile Beach since June 2024. Airalo lists its Cayman eSIM as 4G, and although Nomad's marketing mentions 5G, we would not count on it. In practice Flow's LTE is fast enough for video calls and uploads, so 5G is a nice extra rather than a reason to switch.
