Owen Roberts International sits on the eastern edge of George Town, about five minutes from downtown and the cruise terminal and not much further from the southern end of Seven Mile Beach. It is a short, easy arrival, but it is not a place to sort out a phone. The terminal's list of concessions covers duty free, jewellery, cigars, books, souvenirs and a few places to eat, with no phone shop among them, and the airport authority describes its wireless internet as available in the departure hall rather than on the arrivals side. Outside, taxis are handed out by a dispatcher at regulated fares, the public bus does not come into the airport, and there is no ride-hailing app. Land with an eSIM already live and none of that matters; land without one and your first stop for a local SIM is a Digicel store in town, open Monday to Saturday only. What the GCM Terminal Has, and What It Lacks
Owen Roberts is the gateway for all three islands. It opened to commercial traffic in 1952, has a single runway of 8,362 feet, and handles jets from American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Air Canada, WestJet and British Airways alongside Cayman Airways, the national carrier, which flies to Miami, Tampa, New York, Denver, Kingston, Havana and Central America. Customs opens from 6am to 11pm and the immigration office from 5am until the last flight, and the authority has acknowledged extended security waits on the departure side at busy times, so leave slack on the way home.
No SIM counter in the building
The Cayman Islands Airports Authority lists every concession at Owen Roberts: Kirk Freeport, Jacques Scott Duty Free, Tortuga, Island Jewellers, Churchill's Cigars, Next Chapter books, Last Chance Island Souvenirs, Subway, Wendy's and The Brew Hut. None sells SIM cards, and a local Cayman guide updated in September 2026 confirms there is no SIM stand at the airport. Local lines are sold only in town, with your passport.
One useful stop sits just after immigration: the Department of Tourism's information booth, which is staffed and stocked with brochures on transport, activities and accommodation. It is a good place to confirm a taxi fare or pick up a map, but it does not sell phone service. The nearest places that do are Digicel's three Grand Cayman stores, listed in the section on counter prices below, all closed on Sundays.
Departure Hall WiFi and the Arrivals Gap
The airport authority's amenities page says, in a single line, that wireless internet access is available in the departure hall at Owen Roberts. Some local guides describe the airport more loosely as having free WiFi, but the authority itself does not promise coverage on the arrivals side, and that is the side that matters when you land.
Finish your eSIM setup at home
Because arrivals WiFi is not guaranteed, do the install and any account steps before you leave, then switch the line on as you taxi to the gate. A Cayman eSIM connects to Flow within a minute or so of landing.
If you are relying on WiFi, test it at the belt
Scan for an open network while waiting for bags. If nothing connects, do not burn time on it: the taxi dispatcher works first come, first served, and the queue grows while you stand still.
Use departures WiFi on the way home
On departure day, the departure hall network is a sensible place to check in for onward flights, download boarding passes or send a last message, especially if your Cayman plan has already expired.
A three hour check-in means a long wait
The airport authority asks passengers to arrive three hours before international flights, and gives the same advice for domestic flights to the Sister Islands. That is a long time in a terminal, and the departure hall WiFi and a working data plan together make it easier to handle gate changes, delay notices and messages from home.
Dispatched Taxis, the Fare Formula and No Bus
Taxis wait in the arrival greeting area, and an Airport Ground Transport Attendant assigns them to passengers in order, so there is no haggling at the kerb and no choosing your driver. The national fare schedule that took effect on 2 August 2019 sets the price for a party of up to four, includes the first two bags, and removed the old 25 percent night surcharge in favour of scheduled after-hours fares.

Underneath every figure is the same formula: a base fare of CI$5.60, or US$7, plus CI$0.80, or US$1, for each 0.2 miles, with extras for a fifth passenger, a third bag and waiting time. The government's CI:GO app calculates the exact fare between any two points in both currencies, and independent web calculators apply the same tariff. That is a strong argument for landing with data: you can check the fare before the car pulls away.

What will not work
Rental drivers should remember that Cayman drives on the left, and that the short hop from the airport to West Bay Road runs through George Town's busiest roundabouts. A navigation app with live traffic, running on the eSIM you switched on at the gate, takes most of the stress out of that first drive.
Connecting to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman
Owen Roberts is also the hub for the two Sister Islands, about 90 miles to the north-east. Cayman Airways Express flies from here to Charles Kirkconnell International Airport on Cayman Brac and to Edward Bodden Airfield on Little Cayman, which serve the islands' dive resorts, the Bluff and the quiet beaches of Little Cayman. Charles Kirkconnell resumed night operations in June 2024, and the Brac terminal has recently had an upgraded security checkpoint.

Your Cayman eSIM from Airalo or Nomad covers all three islands on Flow, so there is nothing new to buy for the domestic hop. What changes is how much you can rely on it. Before the connecting flight, while you still have Grand Cayman's strong signal, download dive booking confirmations, offline maps of the Brac and your return boarding pass. Digicel lists no store on either Sister Island, so if you want a local SIM it is simplest to buy it on Grand Cayman first.
Tight connections through GCM
Travellers arriving from Miami or the US and continuing straight to the Brac often have a few hours to wait at Owen Roberts. The departure hall WiFi helps, but it only starts once you are through to the departures side. Having your eSIM live on landing lets you confirm the domestic flight time and message a Brac resort about pickup before you re-check bags.

Unusually for the Caribbean, the counter does not save you money here.
