Douglas-Charles, the airport that went by Melville Hall until 2014, sits on Dominica's north-east coast a couple of miles from Marigot, and it is where nearly every visitor from outside the Eastern Caribbean arrives. It is also on the wrong side of the island for most of them. Roseau, the capital, the cruise berth and most of the dive lodges are on the west coast, and the road there climbs over the rainforest spine by way of Pont Casse, a drive of well over an hour on which both networks drop in and out. There is no SIM counter we can confirm inside the terminal, and the nearest Digicel outlet is a small weekday dealer in Marigot that shuts at 4pm. The arrival has changed in other ways, though: regional jets from Miami, a seasonal United 737 from Newark and a lengthened runway mean more visitors land here straight from North America, and a new international airport is rising a few miles north at Wesley and Woodford Hill. Who Flies Into DOM in 2026
For years the standard advice was that Dominica had no jet service and that you connected through Antigua, Barbados or Guadeloupe on a turboprop. That is out of date. Douglas-Charles has a single runway of about 6,350 feet, recently lengthened by roughly 590 feet in a project finished in late 2024, and it now takes jets from the United States.

Schedules and aircraft change from season to season, so check the equipment on your own booking. What matters for connectivity is the time you land. The Miami flights arrive in the early to mid afternoon, which leaves just enough time to reach a Roseau store before it closes only if immigration is quick and the driver is waiting. Most afternoon arrivals will not make it.
The new airport at Wesley
Dominica is building a larger international airport a few miles north of Douglas-Charles, between Wesley and Woodford Hill, designed for long-haul jets. Government updates in 2026 put the project above 40 percent complete, with the runway largely formed and a tunnel under it to keep the Wesley to Woodford Hill road open. Completion is targeted for 2027, so it will not affect a trip this year, but you will see the earthworks from the road if you head north toward Calibishie.
SIM Cards, WiFi and Cash in the Terminal
The terminal is small: about ten airline check-in counters, two ground-level gates and an executive lounge with WiFi for departing passengers. Arrivals move through a single immigration hall and baggage area, and on a day when the Miami jet and a regional flight land close together the queue can take a while.
No confirmed SIM counter
We found no evidence of a Digicel or Flow sales desk inside Douglas-Charles, and a widely used prepaid SIM reference says neither of Dominica's airports sells cards. Some travel sites describe kiosks that are not always staffed, but none gave a location or hours we could verify. The nearest outlet on Digicel's own store list is Ti Cadeau in Weirs, in the Marigot area close to the airport, open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4pm and closed at weekends. The Digicel outlets that keep longer hours are all an hour or more away in Roseau or at Picard near Portsmouth.
Free WiFi is available in the terminal and is widely reported to work well enough for messages and arrival paperwork. We could not confirm the network name it broadcasts in 2026, so look for an open network carrying the airport's name.
Connect while you wait for bags
The baggage hall is the calmest point to get online. Join the open terminal network and accept any terms page that appears, opening a plain web address in the browser if it does not pop up by itself.
Finish the eSIM you installed at home
Switch the travel eSIM on as your data line, turn on data roaming for that line only, and check it connects to Digicel or Flow before you walk out to the taxi rank.
Save the route offline
Download the map for the whole island, not just Roseau. The road over Pont Casse and much of the interior have long stretches without signal, and an offline map keeps the blue dot moving.

Tell your guesthouse which taxi you are in and roughly when you expect to arrive, since the next reliable signal may be half an hour down the road.

The Government Taxi Sheet From DOM
Airport taxis on Dominica work to a fare sheet set by the Ministry of Public Works, last revised in 2023 and still the version published by the tourism authority in 2026. The shuttle fills up before it leaves, so on a busy afternoon it can mean a wait at the rank, and the drop-offs add time. A couple heading to Roseau pays EC$160 on the shuttle against EC$200 for a private car, which is why many pairs simply take the car. Confirm which service you are on and the total before bags go in the back.
Heading to the hot springs or the Boiling Lake trailhead?
Wotten Waven and Laudat, the villages for the sulphur spas and the Titou Gorge trailhead, sit high above Roseau on the far side of the island from the airport. The private hire rate is the same EC$200 as to the capital, so if that is where you are staying, go straight there rather than via town.
The Drive Over Pont Casse, and Where the Signal Goes
There are two ways from Douglas-Charles to Roseau, and your driver will almost always take the inland one. It follows the Atlantic side briefly, then turns up into the mountains and crosses the island's centre to the Pont Casse junction, before dropping through the rainforest past Springfield toward Canefield and the west coast. Plan on at least an hour and a quarter, and nearer an hour and a half on a wet afternoon or behind a truck. The longer alternative runs around the north through Portsmouth and down the Caribbean coast.

None of that makes the drive dangerous or the phone useless, but it does mean the working connection needs to be in place before you leave the terminal. A message sent from the rank reaches your host; one you try to send from the rainforest section may sit in the outbox for twenty minutes.
If you are renting a car
Dominica drives on the left, the roads over the interior are steep and narrow, and visitors need a local driving permit, which the tourism authority lists at EC$30, roughly 12 US dollars. Buses, by contrast, do not serve the terminal on any timetable, run most reliably Monday to Saturday from 6am to 7pm, and leave when they are full. The official fare from Marigot to Roseau is EC$12.50.

For a stay of a week or more, the Digicel plan is the cheapest way to be online on Dominica, and it is not close. What an eSIM buys at this airport is the first eighteen hours: the queue, the taxi desk, the Pont Casse drive and the evening at the guesthouse, when no store is open. Flying out of DOM
