Kamuzu International is a long way from the city it serves, about 25 kilometres up the M1, and the half hour or more in a taxi is where arriving with data matters most. The taxis outside arrivals are unmetered and quote around 20 dollars to the Old Town, so knowing your lodge's exact Area number and having its phone number reachable saves a lot of confusion in a city that is navigated by numbered districts. SIM sellers are reported in the arrivals area, but we could not confirm which operator staffs them or their hours, and registering a line still means paperwork with your passport after a long connection through Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Johannesburg. A Nomad or Holafly eSIM on Airtel, installed before departure, gets you through that first hour without a counter.

A 1982 Airport with Three Newer Buildings

Kamuzu International Airport, code LLW, was built with Japanese development aid and opened in 1982, when Lilongwe was still a young capital that had taken over from Zomba. It lies north of the city near Lumbadzi, off the M1 road towards Kasungu and Mzuzu. Japan returned decades later to fund an expansion: three new terminal buildings and a radar surveillance system, built by a group of Japanese contractors including Marubeni Protechs and NEC, with the aim of raising passenger handling from about 50 to 500 people an hour. The new layout separates international arrivals from international departures and gives domestic flights their own building, and the original terminal was earmarked for conversion to shops and offices.

International services are almost entirely regional. Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways from Nairobi are the usual long-haul feeders, and there are regional links to Johannesburg, Lusaka, Dar es Salaam and Harare, with Malawian Airlines flying several of them and the domestic hop to Blantyre. Nobody flies non-stop to Lilongwe from Europe, North America or Asia, so every intercontinental visitor arrives through a hub.

Why the hub matters for your phone

Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Johannesburg all have dependable terminal WiFi, and each is the last easy place to download and test an eSIM before Malawi. Do it during the layover, then leave the plan switched off until the aircraft is on the ground at LLW.

Buying a Card Before You Leave the Airport

Travel guides list SIM card kiosks among the facilities at LLW, alongside ATMs, currency exchange and limited food. What we could not verify is which operator staffs them in October 2026, how late they stay open, or what starter packs cost compared with town. Treat any card bought here as a convenience purchase, and expect the registration step that applies everywhere in Malawi: your passport details recorded against the number on a form.

If you want a local card at LLW

1. Clear immigration and customs and collect your bags; nothing phone-related is sold airside.
2. Draw kwacha at an ATM or the exchange counter first; small vendors want cash.
3. Look for Airtel or TNM branding rather than an unmarked seller, since a branded agent can register the line properly.
4. Keep your passport out for the form, and ask for a bundle to be loaded before you pay.
5. Check data loads a map before you walk outside, because there is no second chance until town.

If the kiosks are shut, as they may be for a late Ethiopian or Kenya Airways arrival, the next branded shops are in Lilongwe itself, around the Old Town and the City Centre. That is a fine plan for the following morning, provided you already have a way to call your lodge and a ride booked for the night.

Kwacha, Card Machines and Terminal WiFi

The currency is the Malawi kwacha, written MK or MWK, and in 2026 the official rate sat around 1,730 to the US dollar after the devaluation of November 2023. The airport has ATMs and an exchange counter. Pull enough cash for the taxi and the first day: card acceptance is limited to the larger hotels and supermarkets, and even branded phone shops in town often cannot take a card.

On the terminal WiFi

We could not confirm a current network name or login process for public WiFi in the LLW terminals, and traveller reports are thin. Assume you will have no connection in arrivals unless you bring one. That is reason enough to download your eSIM at home or during the connection in Addis Ababa or Nairobi, not in the baggage hall here.

A note on dollars: Malawi has a large gap between the official rate and the street rate, and money changers approach new arrivals in town. Informal exchange is illegal, and the airport ATM at the official rate is the straightforward option. Some lodges quote in dollars and will accept them, which avoids the issue entirely.

From LLW to Old Town, City Centre or Area 47

Lilongwe is unusually spread out, with the Old Town in the south, the City Centre or Capital City several kilometres north of it, and residential districts identified by number, from Area 3, home to several backpacker lodges, to Area 47 and Area 43. Telling a driver 'Area 10, near the roundabout' is normal; a street address often is not. The drive from LLW runs south along the M1 past Kanengo and takes 30 to 40 minutes depending on where you are going.

OptionHow it worksTimeRoughly
Airport taxiWaiting outside arrivals, unmetered, agree price first30 to 40 minAround $20 to the Old Town, less to the City Centre
Hotel or lodge pickupBooked in advance, driver waits with a sign30 to 40 minOften similar to a taxi, sometimes included
Tour or safari transferPre-arranged by your operatorVariesIncluded in the package
MinibusNo formal service at the terminal; from the M1 only45 min or moreCheap, but impractical with luggage

With data working, the ride becomes simpler in three ways: you can message the lodge to confirm the gate is open, follow the route on a map so the Area you asked for is the Area you reach, and check the dollar quote against your hotel's own transfer price. Do not plan on a ride-hailing app from LLW; we could not confirm one serving the airport in 2026. Malawi's roads are quiet but badly lit, and drives after dark are best kept short, which is another reason to settle the transfer before you land.

Landing in Lilongwe or Blantyre: Which Gateway Fits

Malawi has two international airports, and choosing the right one shapes the first days of a trip more than any phone plan. Kamuzu International in Lilongwe has the wider choice of flights and suits anyone heading for the central lakeshore at Senga Bay and Nkhotakota, the north via Mzuzu and Nkhata Bay, or a western crossing into Zambia for South Luangwa. Chileka International, north of Blantyre, puts you closer to Mount Mulanje, the Zomba Plateau, Liwonde and Majete. The road between the two cities is roughly 300 kilometres, most of a day with stops.

Arriving at LLW with an eSIM running

✓Confirm the taxi price against your lodge's quote while still in the terminal
✓Navigate by Area number on the long drive into town
✓No dependence on kiosks being open for a late hub connection
✓Airtel-based plans hold signal on the M1 north towards Mzuzu

Waiting to buy a card in town

✗Much cheaper data, with 5 GB a week reported at 5,000 kwacha
✗A local number and access to Airtel Money or TNM Mpamba
✗Means a shop visit with your passport on day one
✗Leaves you offline for the 25 km ride from the airport

For a southern trip that starts at Blantyre, Airalo's cheaper plan on Access Communication becomes a more reasonable choice, since that network launched in Blantyre. For a northern or lakeshore route out of Lilongwe, we would stay with Airtel.

Kiosk, Town Shop or eSIM: Price Against Effort

Side by side, the options sort cleanly into cheap with effort and dear without it.

WhereWhat you getPrice
Airtel shop in Lilongwe5 GB, 7 days, passport registrationMK5,000 (about $2.90)
Airtel shop in Lilongwe15 GB, 30 daysMK20,000 (about $11.55)
LLW arrivals kioskStarter pack, if openNot verified
Nomad eSIM (Airtel)3 GB, 30 days$24
Nomad eSIM (Airtel)1 GB, 7 days$9.50
Airalo eSIM (Access)1 GB, 3 days$8
Holafly eSIM (Airtel)Unlimited, 5 days$31.50

No eSIM comes close to the town shop on price, and there is no point pretending otherwise. What the eSIM buys is the airport-to-lodge stretch and the evening of arrival. A common pattern for longer stays is Nomad's 1 GB week at 9.50 dollars to cover the landing, followed by an Airtel card from an Old Town shop the next morning. Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Kamuzu International from Lilongwe's lodges?

About 25 kilometres to the north, off the M1, which is a drive of 30 to 40 minutes. The Old Town and Area 3, where many lodges are, sit at the far southern end, so they are the longest ride. The City Centre is somewhat closer and taxis quote less for it.

What should I pay for a taxi from LLW to the Old Town?

Around 20 dollars is the commonly reported fare, quoted in dollars or the kwacha equivalent. The taxis are unmetered, so agree the figure before loading bags, and compare it with your lodge's own transfer price, which you can check by message if your phone already has data.

Will the SIM kiosk at Lilongwe airport be open for a late arrival?

We could not confirm its hours, or even which operator runs it in 2026. Plan as though it may be closed after the evening flights. An eSIM installed during your connection in Addis Ababa or Nairobi removes the dependence, and Airtel and TNM shops in town open the next morning.

Should I fly into Blantyre instead if I am climbing Mulanje?

Usually yes. Chileka airport near Blantyre is far closer to Mulanje, Zomba and Liwonde than Lilongwe, which is around 300 kilometres away by road. Lilongwe is the better gateway for the central and northern lakeshore, Nyika, and the overland route to South Luangwa in Zambia.

Which eSIM network works best on the drive from LLW into town?

Airtel covers the M1 corridor into Lilongwe, and that is the network Nomad and Holafly use. Airalo's plan runs on Access Communication, whose coverage outside the cities we could not verify, though the city itself should be fine. For travel beyond Lilongwe, we would pick an Airtel-based plan.
