King Mswati III International is a big runway with a small terminal, set in the eastern lowveld at Sikhuphe about 50 kilometres from Manzini, and nothing about it is built around selling you a SIM card. We found no published record of an MTN or Eswatini Mobile counter inside, and MTN's registration rules ask for proof of residence that a visitor rarely has. What the terminal does have is car-hire desks, bank branches and a short taxi rank. With so few flights a day and a long drive to any town, the useful move is to land with data already running, either a travel eSIM or a roaming bundle on a South African line, so you can message your driver or open a map before the forecourt empties.

A 3.6 km Runway in the Lowveld

The airport was planned under the name Sikhuphe International and renamed after the king when he inaugurated it on 7 March 2014; scheduled flights only began on 30 September that year, after a delay over operating licences. It replaced Matsapha, the old airfield beside Manzini, as the only airport in Eswatini handling commercial flights. Construction began in 2003 on a project of about 150 million dollars, with Taiwan contributing 22 million, and critics long called it a white elephant because the passenger numbers never came close to its capacity.

The scale is striking for such a quiet place. The Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority, which runs it, describes a single runway, 02/20, paved to 3,580 metres and able to take a Boeing 747 or an Airbus A340, and a site of about 3,591 hectares. The terminal itself is modest: 6,500 square metres over several floors, designed for 300 passengers at the peak hour. Arrivals, departures and baggage are all in the one building, so there is no terminal to choose and no shuttle to catch.

Who flies here

Eswatini Air, the national carrier that began flying on 26 March 2023, is the main operator, with services to Johannesburg and Durban and a network that has also included Cape Town and Harare. It announced a twice-weekly Lusaka route paired with Harare from April 2026. Airlink has also served the Johannesburg route. Schedules here are thin and change often, so check the carrier for your date rather than assuming a daily frequency.

Getting Online When There Is No Phone Counter

At most African capitals' airports the arrivals hall has an operator booth. At Sikhuphe we could not confirm one: ESWACAA's own description of the terminal lists car rentals, a coffee shop and commercial banks, and neither MTN Eswatini nor Eswatini Mobile names the airport among its outlets. Even if a booth opens for a flight, MTN asks for proof of residence no older than three months to register a line, and that is not something a lodge guest usually has in a carry-on.

The local card is the cheapest line on the table by a distance, and for a long stay it is worth sorting out in Manzini or Mbabane once you have an address. For the first hours after landing, though, it is not an option at all, which is why this airport, more than most, rewards arriving already connected. The full price list is in our Eswatini eSIM guide and local bundles are in the Eswatini SIM card guide.

Terminal WiFi, Banks and Paying in Rand

We could not find a published network name or login procedure for passenger WiFi at King Mswati III, and recent traveller reports are too sparse to rely on. Assume there is none until you see otherwise. That makes the connection airport, usually O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg or King Shaka in Durban, the place to do anything that needs a download, including installing an eSIM profile.

Money before you leave the building

The terminal includes commercial bank branches, but a small airport's counters keep short hours tied to the few daily movements. The lilangeni is pegged one to one with the South African rand, and rand notes are accepted throughout Eswatini, so if you are coming from Johannesburg it is simplest to arrive with rand in your wallet. Expect change in emalangeni, and spend it before you leave the country, because South African shops will not take it.

If you are driving away in a hire car, the bank and the phone question meet at the fuel station: filling up and buying airtime both need cash or a card that works locally, and the first sizeable towns are some distance away. Having maps downloaded and a working data line before you leave the car park takes the pressure off.

Sikhuphe to Manzini, Mbabane and the Parks

This is the part of the trip where the airport's location shows. ESWACAA puts Manzini, the largest city, about 50 kilometres away by road. The capital, Mbabane, and the Ezulwini Valley hotels sit beyond Manzini to the west, so allow for a substantially longer drive to reach them. Hlane Royal National Park, by contrast, is only around 20 kilometres from the runway in a straight line, close enough that the airport's construction raised concern about the park's eagles and vultures.

OptionHow it worksBest for
Car hireDesks in the terminal; the car park is 30 metres from the doorsAnyone touring the parks or heading on to South Africa

Hotel or lodge transferBooked ahead, driver meets the flightEzulwini Valley hotels, Hlane and Mkhaya safaris
Ride-hail appBolt's city list includes Gaborone but no town in EswatiniNot a dependable option here

We could not find a published taxi tariff from the airport, so agree the fare in rand or emalangeni before the bags go in the boot, and confirm whether it covers tolls or a second stop. With a dozen bays and only a handful of flights, the rank can be empty by the time a slow baggage belt finishes, which is the strongest reason to have data at the gate: a WhatsApp message to your lodge or driver, sent while you wait for bags, avoids a long wait in a terminal with little around it.

Signal on the road west

Coverage on the drive toward Manzini follows the main road and the settlements along it. Expect the occasional quiet patch in the lowveld before the city, and keep offline maps of the whole route in case your plan runs on a network that is thinner out here than in town.

What to Sort Out at O.R. Tambo or King Shaka

Almost everyone reaches Sikhuphe on a short regional hop, most often from Johannesburg, so the connection is where the phone work gets done. The terminals at O.R. Tambo and King Shaka have dependable connections and plenty of time between flights.

A short checklist for the connection

1. If you are on a South African line, dial your operator's roaming menu, for Vodacom *135*130#, confirm roaming is active and load a bundle while you still have home signal.
2. If you are on any other line, buy and install the Eswatini eSIM in the lounge or at the gate, and confirm it shows in your phone's settings.
3. Download offline maps covering Manzini, Mbabane and any park you are heading for.
4. Save your lodge or driver's number in WhatsApp and send a message giving your flight number.
5. After landing, turn on the eSIM line or roaming and check which network your phone has picked.

✗No published passenger WiFi to download a profile
✗MTN registration asks for proof of residence
✗The nearest phone shops are in Manzini

If you are not sure which plan size fits your days in the kingdom, the eSIM Finder will match one to your dates, and the Holafly review covers when unlimited data earns its price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy a local SIM when I land at Sikhuphe?

Do not count on it. We found no published record of an MTN Eswatini or Eswatini Mobile counter in the terminal, whose listed facilities are car hire, a coffee shop and bank branches. MTN's registration also asks for proof of residence, so buy any local card later in Manzini or Mbabane if you need one.

How far is King Mswati III airport from Manzini and Mbabane?

The airport authority puts Manzini about 50 kilometres away by road. Mbabane and the Ezulwini Valley hotels lie further west, beyond Manzini, so the drive there is considerably longer. Hlane Royal National Park is much closer, roughly 20 kilometres from the runway in a straight line.

Is there passenger WiFi in the SHO terminal?

We could not find a published network name or login, so plan as if there is none. Install any eSIM during your connection at Johannesburg or Durban, where the terminal connections are reliable, and switch it on after you land.

Does my South African phone work when I land?

Yes, it roams onto an Eswatini network, but only cheaply if you have a roaming bundle loaded. Vodacom last advertised seven-day Travel Data at R99 for 1 GB and R349 for 5 GB. Buy it before you board, while you still have South African signal.

Can I book a ride-hail car from the airport?

Not reliably. Bolt lists no town in Eswatini among its cities, and we could not confirm any other app serving the airport. Use the taxi rank, hire a car in the terminal, or have your hotel send a driver, and agree any taxi fare before setting off.
