IT DEPENDS ON YOUR HOME SIM
South African line: price a roaming bundle first. Any other line: an eSIM, unless you are staying long enough to have a local address. MTN and Eswatini Mobile bundles are the cheapest data in the country, but MTN asks for proof of residence to register a card.

Local data in Eswatini is cheap: MTN's E95 Lula Combo gives 6 GB of anytime data, a 3 GB one-day bonus and 140 minutes for a month, about 5.75 US dollars. The catch sits in the paperwork, not the price. MTN Eswatini's own registration page asks for a passport, a photo taken by the agent and proof of residence no older than three months, which is a document most tourists simply do not carry. That is why the real decision for many visitors is not local card versus eSIM at all, but whether to keep the South African SIM they drove in with and pay for a roaming bundle. This page sets out all three routes in emalangeni and rand, which are the same thing here, since the lilangeni is pegged one to one with the rand.

MTN Eswatini and Eswatini Mobile

There are only two mobile operators in the kingdom, and they divide the market in a way that will be familiar to anyone who knows a small southern African country. MTN Eswatini is the long-established leader, with its head office in Ezulwini and a network of branded outlets and VELA agents who handle sales and registration. Its money service, MoMo, is how a lot of everyday payments happen, and MoMo works even when an MTN Eswatini customer is roaming abroad. Eswatini Mobile is the newer entrant, which launched under the name Swazi Mobile and still appears under that name in some provider listings. It runs e-Mali, its own wallet, and has been marketing 5G home routers, so its investment is visibly going into fixed-wireless internet as much as phones.

Who to pick if you do buy a card

For a visitor, MTN is the default: it has more agents, more shops in the small towns and a longer track record in the rural northwest and east. Eswatini Mobile's bundle menu is broader and includes very large monthly allowances, which suits a long-stay volunteer or a household more than a tourist. Both cover the Mbabane to Manzini corridor thoroughly.

None of the three big travel eSIM sellers makes the choice clean. Airalo names MTN, Nomad says it can use either network, and Holafly lists Swazi Mobile. If you are deciding between a local card and an eSIM purely on coverage, the overlap means it rarely matters in the central towns.

What a Gigabyte Costs Locally

MTN's current headline offer for prepaid customers is the Lula Monthly Combo, a once-off bundle mixing anytime data, a 24-hour bonus, minutes and SMS. Eswatini Mobile sells data-only bundles by day, week and month through its *222# menu. The table puts both beside the eSIMs at about 16.5 emalangeni to the dollar.

Eswatini Mobile monthly50 GB anytime1 monthE500 (about $30)
Airalo eSIM3 GB7 days$20
Nomad eSIM3 GB30 days$21

The MTN combos are the standout. For less than a third of the price of Airalo's 3 GB week, the E95 combo gives twice the data and a month of calls. Eswatini Mobile's monthly bundles below 50 GB split the allowance evenly between day-time and night-time data, so its 16 GB month at E250 is really 8 GB you can use in daylight; read the split before you buy. Its unlimited-until-midnight day pass at E50 is a neat trick for a single heavy day of uploads.

Check the bonus small print

The bonus gigabytes on the Lula combos last 24 hours, not the month, so the figure that matters for a trip is the anytime allowance. Bundles change with promotions; MTN was running a Mega Promo campaign when we checked, so ask at the counter what is current.

The Proof-of-Residence Problem

Every SIM in Eswatini has to be registered under a regulation issued by the Eswatini Communications Commission, and unregistered numbers are disconnected. MTN Eswatini spells out its requirements plainly, and one of them is awkward for visitors.

What MTN Eswatini says you need

1. Your national ID or a valid passport.
2. Proof of residence, not older than three months.
3. A photo of you, captured by the agent at the time of registration.
4. After registration you receive confirmation by SMS, and you can check your status by dialling *1212#.

The passport and photo are easy. Proof of residence is the sticking point: a utility bill or bank statement with an Eswatini address is normal for a resident and unusual for a tourist on a lodge booking. We could not find any MTN statement on what it accepts from foreign visitors instead, such as a hotel confirmation or a letter from a host, so treat a smooth purchase as possible rather than guaranteed and ask before handing over money. The same page notes that one ID can register up to ten numbers.

Eswatini Mobile's website offers a self-service registration portal, but its pages do not list the documents a visitor must show, so we cannot say whether it is easier. If you are a volunteer, NGO worker or student with an address letter from your organisation, either network should be straightforward. If you are on a four-day loop between Kruger and the KwaZulu-Natal coast, the paperwork is the best argument for staying on an eSIM or your home roaming.

Keeping Your South African SIM: What Roaming Really Costs

This is the question most visitors to Eswatini actually have, because the great majority arrive by road from South Africa, through Oshoek-Ngwenya on the Johannesburg road, Matsamo from the Kruger side, Mananga from Komatipoort, or Lavumisa and Mahamba from the south. A South African number does not stop working at the boom gate. It roams onto an Eswatini network, and how much that costs depends entirely on whether you set it up first.

Vodacom launched these Travel Data bundles in 2022 and was still advertising them at R99 and R349 in 2024, bought through *135*130# or VodaPay under International roaming. We could not load a current Vodacom price page to confirm them for October 2026, so dial the code before you leave home. If they still stand, a Vodacom customer pays less for 5 GB on roaming than for Airalo's 5 GB week, and keeps their own number for banking OTPs and WhatsApp. We were unable to confirm current Eswatini roaming rates for MTN South Africa, Telkom or Cell C; check each operator's app before travelling rather than assuming a deal exists.

Three traps at the border

First, roaming on a South African line may need to be switched on before you cross, so check its status at home, and out-of-bundle roaming data is charged by the megabyte, which adds up fast. Second, your phone can cling to a South African tower for a while after the post, especially around Oshoek and Lavumisa, then hand over to an Eswatini network without warning. Third, in the far northeast at Lomahasha, Eswatini meets Mozambique, and a phone can latch onto a Mozambican network instead, which is a different roaming zone and potentially a different price.

Residents of Eswatini going the other way have their own options: MTN Eswatini roaming is activated with *170# at a flat E0.99 per megabyte, and Eswatini Mobile sells roaming data bundles through *222# that are valid only in South Africa and Mozambique.

Where Visitors Can Buy a Card

MTN sells and registers SIM cards at its own outlets and through VELA agents, the registration partners named on its website. In practice that means the MTN shops in Mbabane, Manzini and Ezulwini, where the company's head office sits on the corner of the MR103 and Nshakabili Road. Agents reach further, into towns such as Piggs Peak, Siteki, Nhlangano and Big Bend, but a branded shop is the better bet for a foreigner because staff will have seen passports before. Eswatini Mobile's head office is in Mbabane, next to the Mbabane Clinic, and it lists agents and merchant stores on its website.

Airtime once you have a line

Once registered, top-ups are easy. MTN airtime vouchers are widely sold, and you load an MTN voucher by dialling *555* followed by the voucher number and #. Rand notes are accepted, but change usually comes back in emalangeni, which you cannot spend once you cross back into South Africa.

Do not plan on buying a card at a border post or at King Mswati III airport. We found no published record of an operator counter at either, and a border post is the one place a registration problem would leave you stuck with no data at all. Our King Mswati III airport guide covers what the terminal does have.

Local Card, Home Roaming or eSIM

Eswatini is unusual because there are three sensible answers, not two, and which one wins depends on where your phone contract lives and how long you stay.

Buy a local MTN or Eswatini Mobile card when

โœ“You are staying a month or more and have an Eswatini address
โœ“You need a local number for schools, clinics or employers
โœ“You want MoMo or e-Mali for everyday payments
โœ“Heavy use makes Eswatini Mobile's 50 GB month worthwhile

Use home roaming or an eSIM when

โœ—You have no proof of residence to show
โœ—Your visit is under a week, as most are
โœ—You are on a South African line with a roaming bundle available
โœ—You arrive on a weekend or at a border, far from an MTN shop

Overseas visitors without a South African line should go with an eSIM installed before the border; the full verified price list is in our Eswatini eSIM guide, and the eSIM Finder will size a plan for your dates. If you are tempted by unlimited data for a working stay in Mbabane, the Holafly review explains when it pays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest month of data on an Eswatini SIM?

MTN's E95 Lula Monthly Combo is the best all-rounder, with 6 GB of anytime data, a 3 GB bonus for 24 hours, 140 minutes and 100 SMS, about 5.75 dollars. If you need very large amounts, Eswatini Mobile's 50 GB anytime month costs E500, about 30 dollars.

Does MTN Eswatini really want proof of residence from a tourist?

Its published registration list asks everyone for an ID or passport, proof of residence not older than three months, and an agent-captured photo. It does not say what foreigners can show instead. Ask at an MTN shop whether a hotel or host letter is acceptable before you pay for a bundle.

Will my Vodacom South Africa SIM work in Mbabane?

Yes, it roams onto a local network. With a Travel Data bundle loaded, last advertised at R99 for 1 GB or R349 for 5 GB over seven days, it is good value. Without one, you pay out-of-bundle roaming by the megabyte. Check *135*130# before you reach the border.

Is there an MTN shop at King Mswati III airport?

We found no record of one. The terminal has car-hire desks, a coffee shop and bank branches, but no confirmed operator counter, so arrive with an eSIM or a roaming bundle and buy any local card later in Manzini or Mbabane.

Why does my Eswatini Mobile 16 GB bundle feel smaller?

Because the monthly bundles below 50 GB are split equally between day-time and night-time data. The E250 month gives 8 GB for the day and 8 GB for the night. If you mostly use your phone in daylight, MTN's E150 combo with 10 GB of anytime data is the better buy.
