Cheddi Jagan International sits at Timehri, 41 kilometres up the east bank of the Demerara River from Georgetown, and that distance shapes the whole question of getting connected. The drive into the city takes 45 minutes on a clear road and well over an hour at rush hour or through the current roadworks, and the only phone store you can count on is at the far end of it. Inside the terminal there is free WiFi and a Digicel kiosk that travellers keep reporting but the airport's own shop directory does not list, so an arrival on a late JetBlue or Caribbean Airlines flight may find nothing open. One Communications and ENet do not sell SIMs here at all. Arriving with data already working means you can message the driver, check the fare and follow the route, rather than doing all three from a patchy hotspot at the kerb.

From Wartime Airfield to Oil-Boom Gateway
The airport began in 1941 as Atkinson Aerodrome, a United States Army Air Forces base, opened to commercial traffic after the war, became Timehri International in 1969 and took the name of President Cheddi Jagan in 1997. Its IATA code, GEO, still points at Georgetown rather than at the town where it actually stands. The main runway, 06/24, is 3,360 metres long after the expansion completed in 2018, which is why wide-body aircraft such as British Airways' 777 via Saint Lucia can use it.
What has changed most is the traffic. Passenger movements rose from 182,736 in 2020 to 973,016 in 2025, a more than fivefold increase driven almost entirely by the oil economy. New York JFK is the busiest route, with more than thirty weekly flights between JetBlue, Caribbean Airlines and American Airlines, and Miami, Toronto, Panama City, Bogota, Port of Spain, Bridgetown and Paramaribo are all served. Many of the North American arrivals land in the evening, close together, which is when the immigration hall, the baggage belts and the WiFi are at their busiest.
How the building works today, and what is coming
Arrivals are on the ground floor and departures above, with six boarding bridges, two or three baggage carousels in use and e-gates at immigration. Complete Guyana's electronic Embarkation and Disembarkation form before you fly at ed.gpf.gov.gy, which is free. Copycat sites charge for the same form, so if a site asks for payment, close it. A new 150,000 square foot arrivals building, Terminal 2, is under construction by the UK firm BHM Construction with Manchester Airport Group, following a groundbreaking on 25 August 2025, with completion expected in 2028. A new inline baggage system was due to be running by the end of September 2026. Until Terminal 2 opens, plan around the building as it stands.
The Digicel Kiosk That May or May Not Be There
Ask five people whether you can buy a SIM at CJIA and you will get five slightly different answers, which is itself the most useful fact. Travellers have long reported a Digicel kiosk serving arrivals, with older reports placing it outside the arrivals exit, a couple of minutes' walk to the right past the departures building, and opening roughly 07:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday. A starter SIM there has been quoted at around GYD 2,000, about 9.50 US dollars. The airport's official shop directory does not list any telecom outlet, and several recent reports describe the kiosk as unstaffed at times.
One Communications, the former GTT, does not sell SIMs at the airport. Neither does ENet. If the Digicel kiosk is closed, the nearest dependable counters are in Georgetown: Digicel on Church Street and One Communications on Brickdam.
If the kiosk is open when you land
1. Get Guyana dollars first from the Scotiabank or Republic Bank ATM in arrivals, or from a cambio in the hall.
2. Take the passport itself to the counter, because Digicel registers lines against a government photo ID.
3. Ask for a Mega Data pack rather than airtime: the 7 day version is 22 GB for GYD 2,000 before VAT.
4. Activate it on the spot, or dial *136# to choose the plan yourself.
5. Load a map and send a message before you walk away, since the next staffed Digicel counter is 41 kilometres away.
None of this is complicated when the counter is staffed. The difficulty is only that you will not know until you are through customs, holding your bags, with a driver waiting outside.
Free WiFi, Two ATMs and a Cambio
CJIA offers free WiFi across the terminal with no password, reported by travellers under the network name CJIA Free WiFi. It works for messaging and email and slows noticeably when several evening flights arrive together. Charging points are in the departure lounge, not in arrivals, so land with some battery.
Use the terminal WiFi for these five minutes of admin
Message your hotel or transfer driver with your flight status and which door you are at. Download an offline map of the East Bank and Georgetown, because the route passes long stretches of roadside villages that look alike in the dark. If you are taking a taxi, look up the fare in both currencies so you can agree it before the car moves. Check that your eSIM has registered on the network, not only that it is installed. And if you are flying to Kaieteur or the interior tomorrow, confirm the time with the operator at Ogle now, while you have a connection, since those flights often wait for enough passengers.
Money matters more than it looks. ATMs from Scotiabank and Republic Bank in arrivals dispense Guyana dollars, and cambios in the hall change cash. The rate has been stable at about GYD 209 to the US dollar. US notes are widely accepted in Georgetown, but you get better value paying in local currency, and minibus drivers and small vendors will want small Guyanese notes. Do not change money with individuals outside the terminal.
There is no left-luggage service at CJIA. If you arrive late and connect to an interior flight the next morning, the Courtyard by Marriott that opened beside the terminal in August 2025, with 150 rooms, is within walking distance and saves a night-time drive.
Forty-One Kilometres of East Bank Road
Almost every arrival goes north along the East Bank Demerara road, through Timehri, Soesdyke, Diamond and Providence, past the cricket stadium and into the city. Some descriptions put the airport on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. It is not: that highway branches south toward Linden from Soesdyke. A new link road around the South Dakota motor-racing circuit now connects it directly to CJIA, which helps drivers coming from Linden, but the route to Georgetown is the East Bank road.

The Route 42 minibus is the local way in. Walk out of arrivals, turn right, and the buses wait on the road outside departures, about thirty seconds away. They leave when full, run through the day with no timetable, play their stereos loudly and charge for any seat your luggage takes. From Stabroek Market a city minibus is GYD 100. It is a good ride with a backpack in daylight and a poor one with two suitcases at night.
Mobile signal holds for the whole route, so the drive itself is well covered. What slows it is traffic. A US$75.8 million upgrade of the airport corridor between Timehri and Good Success has been running 24-hour construction shifts with a target of Christmas 2026, and the stretch near Providence Stadium backs up at the 7 to 9 and 4 to 6 rush hours. Parts of the road are poorly lit at night. Allow extra time on the way back for a flight.

A week on a Digicel line, SIM included, costs about what Nomad charges for 5 GB, and carries four times the data. What the eSIM buys is certainty at the moment certainty is scarce: a kiosk that may be shut, a queue behind a passport check, and a driver who has already started the meter.
