Libreville's Leon Mba airport has one phone shop, Airtel's, and it sits after customs, takes cash only and has been reported open from six in the morning to seven in the evening. That matters because a good share of the long-haul arrivals from Paris, Casablanca and Addis Ababa land in the evening. Anyone coming in after the shutters are down, or without Central African francs in hand, leaves the terminal offline. Since April 2026 the ride into town has a fixed answer, the Gozem taxi rank with set prices by zone from 4,000 francs, so the phone is no longer needed to haggle, but it still matters for telling your hotel or driver you have landed, and for everything that follows in the city.

A Single Terminal on the Estuary Coast

Leon Mba International Airport, coded LBV, is Gabon's main gateway and sits on the coast to the north of central Libreville, close to the Atlantic shore and the neighbourhoods of the northern city. Built in the 1950s, it has a single 3,000 metre runway, 16/34, used by long-haul jets, regional turboprops and the military side of the field. GSEZ Airport, linked to the Gabon Special Economic Zone, is the operator that partnered with Gozem on the fixed-fare taxi rank opened in 2026.

The route map is a mix of long-haul links and short regional hops. Among the carriers listed, Air France flies from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Royal Air Maroc from Casablanca and Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, while ASKY, RwandAir, Air Cote d'Ivoire, Camair-co and Afrijet tie Libreville to Lome, Kigali, Abidjan, Douala, Yaounde, Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and Sao Tome. Domestic services head to Port-Gentil, Franceville, Oyem and smaller towns.

Arriving from Port-Gentil or the interior

The Airtel counter was reported after the customs check, which domestic passengers do not go through, so if you fly in from Port-Gentil or Franceville do not assume your exit passes it. Oil and mining staff on rotation usually keep a registered local line anyway; if yours has lapsed, a shop in town is the safer bet than hunting for the airport counter.

The Airtel Shop Opposite the Bakery

The only operator counter in the terminal is Airtel's. A detailed 2024 traveller account places it just after the customs check, on the right as you walk out, in the covered area opposite the Paul bakery. Moov Africa Gabon Telecom had no counter in the airport at that time; for a Moov card you need a shop in town, such as those in the Mbolo shopping centre.

Buying a card at LBV, in order

1. Clear immigration, collect bags and pass customs; nothing is sold airside.
2. Withdraw Central African CFA francs at an ATM or change money at a kiosk; the shop has been reported as cash only.
3. At the Airtel counter, hand over your passport, which staff photograph or copy.
4. Choose a bundle. Prices reported in 2024 were 5,000 francs for 2.5 GB over a week and 10,000 for 7 GB over a month, with a SIM fee of about 1,000 francs sometimes waived on larger bundles.
5. Test data before walking off, by opening Gozem or a map.

Two catches. The reported opening hours, 06:00 to 19:00, do not cover every evening arrival, and a delayed flight makes that worse. And the cash requirement catches people who planned to pay by card. An eSIM bought before departure sidesteps both.

Gozem's Fixed Fares and the Ride Into Town

On 23 April 2026 Gozem and GSEZ Airport opened a taxi rank with fixed prices at the drop-off area outside the terminal. It runs around the clock, and you can take one of its cars whether or not you have the Gozem app, which makes the airport one of the few places in Libreville where the fare is settled before you get in.

Ordinary Libreville taxis have no meters and work on a negotiated price, often picking up other passengers on the way, so agree the fare before loading bags. Gozem's rank was introduced specifically to deal with the late-night arrivals problem, when negotiating with tired luggage in hand was the norm. The journey to the centre usually takes fifteen to thirty-five minutes depending on traffic along the coastal road, and both networks cover it fully, so an eSIM working from the arrivals hall stays connected all the way to your door.

Central African Francs, ATMs and the Terminal WiFi

Gabon uses the Central African CFA franc, written XAF or FCFA. It is pegged to the euro at the same rate as the West African franc used in Senegal and Ivory Coast, but the two are separate currencies, and West African notes are not accepted in Gabon. The terminal has ATMs and exchange kiosks, and drawing francs before leaving the building saves trouble with the Airtel counter and the taxi rank.

Do not plan around the airport WiFi

We could not confirm a current network name or login process for public WiFi at Leon Mba, and none of the recent traveller accounts we read relied on it. Treat any free access as a bonus. If you intend to use an eSIM, download and install it before you set off, while you are on a dependable connection at home or in the lounge at Paris, Casablanca or Addis Ababa, then switch on the line once you land.

Remember the social media suspension when you land. Since February 2026 Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram have been blocked on Gabonese networks, and WhatsApp has worked only intermittently. Arrange pickups by phone call or SMS rather than assuming a messaging app will get through.

Airtel Counter Prices Against an eSIM

Lined up together, the numbers show a smaller gap than in most African airports, because Gabonese data is expensive even locally.

OptionWhat you getPrice
Airtel at LBV (2024 report)2.5 GB, 7 days, passport registration5,000 F (about $9)
Airtel at LBV (2024 report)7 GB, 30 days10,000 F (about $18)
Airalo eSIM1 GB, 3 days, Gabon Telecom$6
Airalo eSIM3 GB, 7 days, Gabon Telecom$15
Airalo eSIM10 GB, 30 days, Gabon Telecom$35
Nomad eSIM3 GB, 30 days, Airtel$18
Holafly eSIMUnlimited, 1 day, Airtel$9.50

A week on the Airtel counter is cheaper than any eSIM week, and the month is about half the price. Against that, the counter needs francs, a passport and opening hours that do not suit every flight. For a one-night layover between regional flights, Holafly's single day at 9.50 dollars or Airalo's three-day gigabyte at 6 dollars costs about the same as the counter and involves no queue. For a long stay, landing on a small eSIM and buying a local line in town later, once you know which network works where you are staying, is often the best of both. The full price list is in the Gabon eSIM guide, local bundles are in the Gabon SIM card guide, and the eSIM Finder will match a plan to your dates.

Sorting It Out at Home or at LBV

The choice turns on your arrival time and whether you carry francs, more than on the price of data.

Landing with an eSIM working

✓Online even if the Airtel shop has closed for the evening
✓No need to find francs before you can get connected
✓Choice of network: Moov through Airalo, Airtel through Nomad or Holafly
✓Ready to message your driver before you reach the Gozem rank

Buying at the Airtel counter

✗Gives you a +241 number and access to Airtel Money
✗Cheaper per gigabyte, roughly half for a month
✗Cash only and reported hours of 06:00 to 19:00
✗Airtel only; Moov needs a trip to a shop in town

Most long-haul travellers reach Libreville via Paris, Casablanca, Addis Ababa or Lome. All have dependable connections on the ground, so that layover is the moment to install and test an eSIM before the final leg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Moov counter at Libreville airport as well as Airtel?

Not according to the most detailed recent traveller report, from 2024, which found only an Airtel shop, after customs and opposite the Paul bakery. For a Moov Africa Gabon Telecom card, visit a shop in town such as those at the Mbolo shopping centre. If you want the Moov network from the moment you land, Airalo's eSIM uses it.

What does the Gozem taxi from LBV to Boulevard Triomphal cost?

Boulevard Triomphal is in Gozem's Zone 1, at a fixed 4,000 CFA francs. Zone 2 areas such as Okala and Angondje cost 6,000, and Zone 3, including Owendo port and Mindoube, costs 8,000. The rank opened in April 2026, runs 24 hours, and you do not need the app to use it.

Can I pay for an airport SIM card with a Visa or Mastercard?

It has been reported as cash only, so assume you cannot. Use an ATM or exchange kiosk in the terminal for Central African CFA francs before going to the Airtel counter. West African francs from Senegal or Ivory Coast will not be accepted.

My flight from Paris lands at 21:00. Will I be able to buy a SIM?

Probably not at the airport. The Airtel shop has been reported open from 06:00 to 19:00, so a late arrival will likely find it closed. The Gozem taxi rank runs all night, but an eSIM installed before departure is the only way to have data from the moment you leave the plane.

Will WhatsApp work when I land in Libreville?

Maybe, but not reliably. Since the February 2026 social media suspension, WhatsApp has been reported working intermittently and differently on Airtel and Moov, while Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram were blocked. Arrange your pickup by phone or SMS, which were not affected.
